Mail Filtering
Our Mail Filtering and Routing service is a complete solution for clients who maintain their own Email servers. With this great service, We Host It Australia offers three great services in one:
- Inbound Anti-Virus Scanning
- Inbound Anti-Spam Scanning
- Backup Mail Server (MX)
How does this work?
The concept of this solution is quite simple. The service is implemented by changing the MX records for your domain(s) to point to our mail server. Our Mail Server is then configured with your domain information, and details on where to forward your 'cleaned' messages (likely your current MX record).
The process that inbound messages follow is as follows:
- Messages are sent to our Mail Server
- We scan all messages for viruses, and check the messages against our comprehensive anti-spam checks
- if the message passes these checks, it is placed in the outbound queue
- Our mail server checks to ensure it can establish a connection to your mail server. If so, the message is delivered.
- If a connection is not available to your mail server, the message is held in the outbound queue for up to 5 days.
This process helps to ensure that the volume of unwanted messages that are received by your organisation is reduced as much as possible. Also, because the messages are stored on our mail server if your server is unreachable, you can trust that if you do encounter any issues with your mail server, that any pending messages are safe and will be delivered as soon as your mail server is back online.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you determine is a message is a Virus or Spam Message?
Our systems include a number of scanning systems, that look for both Viruses as well as Spam messages. These systems are constantly being checked and updated to detect and block the most current threats. Our systems are designed to be adaptive, and can quickly respond to new threats and patterns to block as much unwanted content as possible.
How long are messages stored on your system if our mail server is not reachable?
Messages are stored on our server for up to 5 days in the event that your mail server is not reachable. Messages are attempted to be delivered approximately every half hour - so as soon as your mail server is back online your messages will be delivered quickly.
Does this service work like a 'backup MX'?
Yes, this service has the benefits of providing a very similar service to a 'Backup MX'. In fact, this service is even better than a standard Backup MX service, due to the way the mail servers are configured. All of our mail servers are provisioned on our enterprise grade Virtualisation system, using enterprise-grade solutions from VMware. The high-availability component of this software helps to ensure that our systems are online all the time. Check out our Datacenter for more information on where these systems are housed.
What happens to messages that are detected as Virus infected or SPAM message?
Messages that are detected as Virus infected messages are blocked by our system. These messages are not delivered to your system. Messages that are classed as spam have two possible scenarios. Messages with a medium spam score are tagged as spam, and are delivered to your email server. Messages with a high spam score are not delivered to your email system.
Is it possible to retrieve messages that have been blocked?
Yes, if a message is blocked from being delivered to you because it has been identified as a Virus or Spam message, we can release the message to be sent through to you. You can contact our support team at any time to investigate if a legitimate message has been blocked. Where a legitimate message has been blocked, we will immediately release the message and it will be delivered to you. An archive of the messages that have been blocked is kept for a maximum of one week only. Any messages that have been blocked for then a week ago are not available to be released.
